Galleries can feel intimidating, as if there is a right answer you are supposed to know. There is not. These simple habits will help you get more out of any exhibition, whether it is a major museum or a small local show.

Slow down

Most visitors spend a few seconds per work. Pick five pieces and give each a full two minutes. You will notice far more.

Look before you read

Form your own impression first, then read the label. Notice whether the context changes what you see.

Ask three questions

What do I notice first? How does it make me feel? What choice did the artist make that surprised me?

Leave before you are tired

An hour of real attention beats three hours of wandering. Come back another day for the rest.
